Earth Survival Camp

Ages 8 - 13

When we find ourselves in the wilderness we can feel lost if we don't know the terrain of survival. How to find shelter, fire, water and food can be the difference between living and dying. Similarity, when we find ourselves lost in the wilderness of our culture, its helpful to have a few tools for the journey like quieting the mind, cultivating resilience, learning to trust our instincts and more.

Earth Survival Camp I: Join guides as we dive into the forest with a focus on how to survive and thrive in the wilderness. We’ll practice the essentials of fire building, shelter making, water purification, and wild food. We may find ourselves wrapped up in other adventures of navigation, knot tying, cordage making, bird language, wild crafting, carving, and more. Along the way, we’ll absorb naturalist skills through direct experience and interactive games that will test our physical and mental agility, stamina and awareness. And we won’t forget to play a few epic games along the way that will leave us dirty, laughing and connected with the earth, ourselves and each other in new ways. Throughout this experience, we’ll hold the wisdom of the ancestors as we pass these skills to the next generation of thriving, connected, and soulful humans.

Earth Survival Camp II: This week builds on the previous week giving campers the space to deepen into skills, quests and adventures. We will continue to explore similar themes of survival. It is not required to attend Earth Survival I and all are welcome to join us on this second week of unfolding adventure.

Optional Overnight: This year we are expanding the experience into the night, giving campers an opportunity to sleep in a lean-to shelter. They will have the opportunity to cook dinner over the fire, listen to the night sounds, peer at the stars, play additional games and experience a full 24 hours outside away from technology.

The Full Story

Why Choose Summer Camp?

“What we need now are new stories to share with each other, new tales to live into the world, which is to say, stories to make real by living our own versions of them.”

What do we learn from summer camp at WOW?

  • Learning hazards and safety: Gaining awareness of potential hazards like plants, animals, obstacles and more, we'll find the balance of taking risks and staying safe.

  • Survival Skills: Touching on the basics of survival from shelter building, water purifying, edible plants, and fire building.

  • Ancestor Skills: Learning about the skills and lifeways for living on earth that our ancestors used.

  • Wildlife Tracking: Learning the mindset of the tracker including observation, pattern recognition and the art of questioning, as we explore tracks and sign of what animals are present around us.

  • Plant and Trees: We’ll hone in our identification skills as we use plants and trees for medicine, edibles, fire and bush crafting activities.

How do we grow summer camp at WOW?

  • Resilience and Confidence: Gaining awareness and new skills in a new setting that we can take with us anywhere.

  • Connection and Community: Meeting new friends, sharing our stories, and learning how to be with each other when things get tough or conflict arises.

  • Teamwork, Communication and Problem-Solving: Finding our strengths, advocating for our needs, learning to listen to others and find solutions within a group to honor all.

  • Recognizing our Gifts: Space to be ourselves, releasing the judgements of our inner voices and the outer voices of our culture, we can let our unique, individual way of seeing the world shine.

  • Centeredness and Quiet Mind: Through core routines, we can match the rhythms of nature, breathing a little deeper and letting go of our busy every churning thoughts.

Location

Address: 697 Tinney Road, Mount Holly VT 05758

Please note that cell service can be spotty in the Green Mountains when relying on GPS navigation.

WOW is located north of Ludlow Vt off of Route 103. Turn onto Sawyer Hill Road and proceed about 2 miles until reaching Tinney Road on the right. You will see the Forest Echo Farm mailbox. Follow this for about 1/2 miles until reaching the WOW parking area on your left.

If you reach the red buildings, you have gone too far. This part of the land is used by Forest Echo Farm (FEF) and its members and guests. Please turn around and proceed back up the hill towards the parking on the right.

Note: Please avoid taking Patch Brook Road as this is a seasonal and very narrow road along a stream that is prone to washing out in heavy rain. There are very few spaces to turn around or to let another car pass in the other direction.
